In case you do not know, I believe both Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning are traitors to America. Julian Assange probably has done nothing illegal, outside possibly rape, but he is still one of the leading threats to American security.
Let me give the rundown on each of these men. Edward Snowden is one of the biggest traitors in American history. He took a contract job with the NSA specifically to get access to classified information and steal it. After getting millions of classified documents, most of which had nothing to do with domestic spying, he proceeded to give them to Russian intelligence.
Bradley Manning is the best of these three men. Although he released millions of classified documents they were primarily a PR problem and there is no evidence anyone was killed. Julian Assange is a different story. Assange’s Wikileaks is widely considered to have become a Russian front which is no surprise once you realize that Wikileaks has published 9,720 American documents but only 57 Russian documents. In these documents were the names of American informants in Afghanistan risking the lives of American allies, information used by Al-Qaeda and information on the opposition in dictatorial countries.
Before we move on, can we dispense with this myth about “just treason”? Treason is not just defiance of the government. Treason in America is simple, as the Constitution states, “treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” When you commit treason you are either, by definition, attacking America or helping her enemies. Do not call yourself a patriot if you actively support actions that harm your country because it is in your political interest. Agreement with a certain policy is not the question
Let us not fall into a fallacy by conflating resistance to just laws with hurting the country. As Martin Luther King said, “One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” Often those who praise the treasonous activities of Snowden and others will attempt to cast themselves in the light of the founders when nothing could be further from the truth. Revolution can be just to overthrow or separate from the tranny. It is a completely different matter to help the enemies of your country to fight tyranny. As the Declaration of Independence says, “…whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government…”. If the allies of Snowden were around in 1776 they would be left standing around asking why the colonists did not just help the French. Just under three decades later they would be screeching about how Aaron Burr was in the right because of something about the founding fathers. Of course, none of this is a surprise once you realize the strong anti-American bend in treason apologist circles.
In the end, our compass should be to follow what is right and true. Our country and government are not perfect nor are they entitled to our unquestioning and eternal support but do not confuse Daniel Ellsberg with Edward Snowden. Both released classified information on illegal activities of the government but one did it to American newspapers and the others gave millions of documents to Russian intelligence. To paraphrase John Schindler, support your country, no matter how imperfect she can be. Love her- not uncritically but love her.
