Republican lawmaker Devin Nunes, chairman of the House of Representatives’ Intelligence Committee, announced Thursday that he is refusing to investigate allegations of Russian interference in last year’s presidential election.

Nunes, a strong ally of Trump, was at the center of a huge controversy over attempts to politicize investigations and protect the White House, although in an official note blamed the controversy on “leftist activists.”

According to Nunes, the denunciations filed against him before the Congressional Ethics Office are “false and politically motivated,” but he considered it “of interest” for the Intelligence Commission to step aside.

“I will continue to fulfill my other responsibilities as President of the Commission,” said the legislator.

The House Intelligence Committee has an investigation into the alleged interference by Russian intelligence agencies during the presidential elections in 2016.

According to US intelligence agencies, Russia was behind the piracy of spreading emails of candidate Hillary Clinton, with the aim of helping the victory of Donald Trump.

However, the investigation took on a broader and more controversial character than Trump’s claim – uncontested – that he and his campaign team were subjected to espionage by former President Barack Obama.

Nunes’ credibility for conducting the investigation was shattered last month when he received information he considered to support Trump’s complaint, but instead of informing the Commission he rushed to inform the president of what had happened.

Nunes was at the center of the controversy since the investigation he conducted in the Commission supposedly had Trump as one of the targets of the polls and therefore could not have kept him informed of new details.

To make matters worse, it transpired that the information that apparently confirmed Trump’s denunciation of Obama had come from second- and third-rank officials of Trump’s own government.
